Home Security Steps for an ApartmentNovember 5, 2018
If you live in an apartment, you may think you don’t need home security. After all, isn’t that the landlord’s problem?
Far from it! The truth is that multi-unit buildings are prime targets for problems of all types. You are slightly safer if there is access control to your building, but even that isn’t 100%.
Of course, you don’t have access to the outside of the building as easily as you would with your own home, and you may not be able to make many modifications inside either. Still, you can take important security steps.
Here are some ways to get started.
Know Your Neighbors
It’s an odd thing about American living – even when we live in multi-unit housing we rarely know those we live around. It’s time for you to break the mold!
Any time you run into someone, introduce yourself and find out which apartment they live in. Work on remembering their names – write them down at home if you have to! Continue to say hi when you see them, and you’ll begin to make connections.
Your neighbors can be an incredible help when it comes to home security. They can keep an eye out for anything odd that’s happening. They can let you know about new neighbors and other changes in the neighborhood.
If something happens, knowing your neighbors will allow you to find help more quickly. It never hurts to have friends watching your back.
Keep Your Doors and Windows Locked
It’s easy to be lulled into a sense of false security, especially in a quiet neighborhood or secured building. Remember, though, folks can get into your building in a variety of ways. It’s your responsibility to make sure they can’t get into your specific apartment.
Locking your door is the first step, but make sure to secure your windows as well. You can put a rod in the track of a sliding door or window to ensure it can’t be opened. For your main door, consider set screws to secure the hinges.
Your home security will be a lot better once you take these simple steps.
Use a Home Security System if Possible
Curious what’s going on when you’re not home? Security cameras in your apartment can help you keep an eye on things. You can take a look at what’s going on in the apartment even when you’re not home!
There may be some limits to what you can install or alter within your apartment, but those limitations shouldn’t keep you from installing a home security system or camera. You will probably need to keep everything inside the walls of your apartment, but that’s no problem.
Having security systems in place will help you with your peace of mind, especially if you have pets or children who are sometimes home alone.
